Gopal Jiu Publications is pleased to announce a new CD of studio-recorded songs by Sri Damodar Giri and the Gadeigiri kirtaniyas. Damodar Giri is the cousin of Sri Srimad Gour Govinda Swami and a famous kirtan singer in Orissa. Gour Govinda Maharaja was very fond of his kirtans.

The Gadeigiri kirtaniyas are expert in the traditional ranihati (also known as raniti) style of kirtana started by Srila Shyamananda Prabhu, the sixteenth-century Gaudiya Vaishnava acharya who spread Vaishnavism all over Orissa. The heart of the Gadeigiri kirtanas is the village’s beloved deity Sri Gopal Jiu. It is said that Gopal came to Gadeigiri in east-central Orissa from Vrindavan in the early 1700’s just to hear the kirtana of the Giri family, who have sung for him ever since. The songs and musical styles contained on this CD have been handed down from generation to generation in the Giri family for over three hundred years. The third song on this CD is part of a larger collection of songs that describe a wonderful pastime of how Krishna once took sannyasa to pacify the loving sulkiness of Srimati Radharani. This complete story has been elaborately translated in Sri Krishna Kathamrita magazine, issue nine.
