The journey of a young man who follows his heart to fight injustice and find positive alternatives to hate and violence. Seeking the meaning of life, the author becomes a staff member of the Northern Student Movement's Harlem office, and learns lessons in survival and community among the tenements and the colourful communities of Lower East Side New York.

His convictions lead him to direct action in the South, where is beaten and arrested many times for his protests. In August 1963 he helps organise the March on Washington.

During his travels the author meets and converses with such varied personalities as Martin Luther King Jnr, Stokely Carmichael, Julian Bond, Sonny Liston, Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey. After a reflective interlude in Mexico he lands smack in the middle of the San Francisco swinging 60s and experiences psychedelia and community living. Here his search for truth, after encompassing many cultures and spiritual traditions, leads him to his personal guru. The journey is long, but finally he meets the devotees and a new life begins
