Canto Six brings us to the deathbed of a very sinful man with the messengers of death snatching his soul from his body. Yet the messengers of the spiritual world have come to forbid the Yamadutas from taking this man, saying that since this person has chanted the holy name of the Lord at the time of death, then he has become free of all sins. We will hear the two different groups of messengers debate over Ajamila’s destiny and finally see how powerful is the holy name of the Lord to save us from death. This canto also reveals the Narayana-kavaca prayers, which can protect us from all calamities.

How the Lord protects His dear devotees will be shown throughout this sixth canto. How was the sinful Ajamila saved from the fearful Yamadutas at the last minute during his near-death experience? How was Indra saved after committing an offense to his spiritual master? What are the special prayers for protection that can free us from all dangers? How did the demon Vrtrasura ascend to the spiritual world? Sukadeva tells all these stories to give us hope that even though we may not be born in elevated families, even though we sometimes make mistakes while on the spiritual path, even though we are sincerely trying to follow the path of devotional service but we cannot do it perfectly—despite all these disqualifications—if we persist with determination and chant the holy names of Lord Krsna—we can achieve the highest goal of going back to Godhead to the spiritual world in this very life.

Canto Six contains a pictorial overview (a picture for every verse) with a written overview at the end of each chapter.
