Canto Five Srimad Bhagavatam at a Glance

How could a very advanced devotee fall down from his position, forget his spiritual practice and engage in material life? This is the story of the lives of two greatly advanced devotees: King Priyavrata and King Bharata. In the Second half of the Fifth Canto all the planets from the lowest to the highest planets in the universe are described. We hear of oceans of milk, ghee, yogurt, as well as rivers of honey and fruit juices and much more.

 

From the life stories of King Priyavrata and Bharata we learn that one who is attached to the nectarean honey of the Lord’s lotus feet may sometimes be checked by an impediment, but he still never gives up the exalted position he has attained. This we clearly see as we follow Bharata through his three lives as an emperor, a deer and an exalted devotee. The Lord’s incarnation, King Rshabhavadeva appears in this canto to enlighten his sons in the glories of devotional service. The structure of the universe is described in detail from the highest planets of the sages and demigods down to the lowest abodes of snakes and demons. Everywhere else in the universe the inhabitants are enjoying. Only the earth where we live is the field of activities where the living entity can enjoy or suffer according to the fruits of one’s work. Yet even the demigods in heaven aspire for a birth on this earth planet to perform devotional service and quickly attain perfection of going back to Godhead.
Canto Five contains a pictorial overview (a picture for every verse) with a written overview at the end of each chapter.
