Canto Eight gives us a glimpse of the heavenly planets where in the ancient past we see a constant fight between demoniac and godly forces. An elephant fights for his life with a crocodile and eventually surrenders to the Supreme Lord, who comes to his rescue. The universal demons and demigods make peace in order to together churn the milk ocean. Unfortunately, the first thing to come out is fire, smoke and poison. Later on, many wonders emerge from the ocean, such as a beautiful women, elephants and even Lakshmi, goddess of wealth.  After vigorously churning the ocean, a powerful incarnation of Vishnu named Dhanvantari appears carrying the nectar of immortality.

Simply by pleasing his guru, Bali Maharaja, king of the demons, conquers the heavenly kingdom and sits on the king of heaven Indra’s seat. At that time, the Supreme Lord Vamanadeva appears and cheats Bali Maharaja out of the kingdom by begging it from him in charity. The Lord then returns the universe to Indra. Through all trying circumstances, Bali is undisturbed and accepts the Lord’s order on his head. Thus Bali Maharaja is elevated to the status of a mahajana, or authority on pure devotional service. He stands for the truth, even though being unfairly chastised, cursed, insulted and arrested, as well as being cheated of the heavenly kingdom.

Canto Eight contains a pictorial overview (a picture for every verse) with a written overview at the end of each chapter.
