From the beginning of the creation, the followers of Lord Siva and the brahmanas have quarreled. We hear how it all started at the sacrifice of Daksa, where the brahmanas and Siva’s followers curse and countercurse each other and finally Daksa ends up getting a goat’s head in exchange for his own. In the two stories of Daksa and Dhruva we learn of the dangers of making offenses to devotees and we also learn of the glories of how worshiping the Supreme Lord purifies our heart of material desires.

In this canto Lord Siva is glorified at the end of Daksa’s sacrifice as being the best of the devotees. Although his wife Sati kills herself out of anger at her father Daksa, Lord Siva is merciful to Daksa by taking away his false prestige. From this story we learn not to judge by external appearances, but to go deeper to see the character of the person. Dhruva Maharaja leaves home at the age of five years to go to the forest. After performing great austerities, he sees the Lord and obtains the rulership of his father’s kingdom as well as of the Lord’s spiritual planet within this material world. Although determined to get his father’s kingdom and to have revenge against his stepmother, upon meeting the Supreme Lord, he regrets having these desires, and wants only to serve the Lord.

Canto 4.1 contains a pictorial overview (a picture for every verse) with a written overview at the end of each chapter.
